Understanding Swallowing During Craniosacral Therapy
If you find yourself swallowing frequently during craniosacral therapy (CST), you're not alone. In fact, this is a common and positive sign that your body is processing tension and finding balance. Here's why it happens and what it means:
Why Do I Swallow So Much During CST?
Nervous System Regulation
Swallowing is connected to the vagus nerve, which helps shift your body into a "rest-and-digest" state.
Increased swallowing often means your body is releasing tension and moving into deeper relaxation.
Fascial and Cranial Releases
CST works to ease restrictions in the body's tissues.
As these restrictions release, swallowing can occur as a natural reflex.
Emotional Processing
Sometimes, emotional energy can be held in the throat or chest.
Swallowing may indicate that emotions are processing, even if you’re not consciously aware of it.
Jaw and Throat Tension
Tension in the hyoid bone or jaw (TMJ) can stimulate the swallowing reflex.
Releasing these areas helps restore ease and balance.
What to Expect During Your Session
You may notice periods of frequent swallowing, deep breathing, warmth, or other sensations.
These are natural signs that your body is responding positively to the therapy.
There is no need to suppress or control the swallowing; your body knows what it’s doing.
What You Can Do After the Session
To support your body after a CST session, try these gentle practices:
Deep Breathing: Slow, diaphragmatic breathing helps maintain a calm nervous system.
Jaw Relaxation Exercises: Gentle jaw stretches or massages can reduce tension.
Stay Hydrated: Adequate water intake keeps tissues hydrated and functioning smoothly.
Mindful Awareness: Notice when swallowing increases, as it may signal tension release.
When to Mention It
If swallowing continues to be noticeable or feels uncomfortable, let your therapist know. We can explore specific areas, such as the cranial base or throat, to support further release.
Your body is incredibly wise. Trust that these responses are part of a natural healing process.
